Trouble Accessing Locked Chapters?

Sometimes a chapter may appear locked even when you should already have access to it. This is usually caused by browser caching or a delay in communication between Patreon and the website.

The solution depends on whether you’re trying to read a publicly available chapter or one included with your Patreon membership.

If a Public Chapter Is Still Locked

If a chapter has already been released to the public but still appears locked, your browser may be displaying an older, cached version of the page.

Try the following:

  1. Refresh the page. A hard refresh (Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows or Cmd + Shift + R on Mac) may force your browser to load the latest version.
  2. Clear your browser’s cache. You can usually clear cached data for this website without clearing your entire browsing history.
  3. Try another browser or device. You can also try opening the chapter in a private or incognito window.
  4. Open the chapter from the website’s chapter list. If you’ve been using an old bookmark or leaving the same tab open, navigating to the chapter again may help.

If the chapter still appears locked, please contact me so I can check whether there’s an issue with its public release settings.

If You’re a Patreon Member and Can’t Access Advance Chapters

Patreon-exclusive chapters require the website to recognize your active Patreon membership and its corresponding tier.

Unfortunately, Patreon and WordPress don’t always communicate perfectly. Sometimes there’s a delay in updating membership permissions, particularly after joining, upgrading, or renewing a subscription.

These issues will sometimes resolve themselves after a few hours, but there are several things you can try in the meantime.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Log into Patreon first. Visit Patreon and sign into the account associated with your active membership. Make sure your membership is active and includes access to the chapter you’re trying to read.
  2. Open my website in the same browser. Once you’re logged into Patreon, visit scribeundead.com and navigate to the chapter you want to read.
  3. Connect your Patreon account. If the chapter is locked, click Unlock with Patreon or Login with Patreon. If an authorization window appears asking you to allow the website to access your Patreon membership information, approve the connection. Being logged into Patreon doesn’t automatically mean you’re authenticated on my website.
  4. Refresh the chapter and clear your cache. Try the chapter’s Refresh button if one is available, or perform a hard refresh (Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows or Cmd + Shift + R on Mac). If that doesn’t work, clear your browser’s cached data for the website.
  5. Check your browser’s privacy settings. Make sure cookies are enabled for Patreon and my website. Temporarily disable any ad blockers or privacy extensions that might interfere with the login process, then try unlocking the chapter again.
  6. Try a different browser or device. Preferably use one that hasn’t previously loaded the locked chapter. Log into Patreon first, then open my website and connect your membership.
  7. Access the chapter through the story’s chapter list. Instead of repeatedly refreshing the same locked page, navigate back to the story’s chapter list and open the chapter from there.
  8. Allow some time for your membership to update. If you’ve recently subscribed, upgraded, or renewed your membership, Patreon and WordPress may need some time to synchronize. Sometimes the issue resolves itself after a few hours.

Important: You should never need to purchase another membership just to unlock chapters your current tier already includes.

If you’re having trouble signing into Patreon itself, try using Patreon’s official app or checking your account directly on Patreon.

To make troubleshooting easier, please include:

  • A link to the chapter you’re trying to access.
  • Your Patreon membership tier.
  • A brief description of what happens when you try to unlock it.
  • A screenshot of any error message, if possible.

Please don’t send your Patreon password or other sensitive login information.

I know it’s frustrating to be locked out of chapters you’re supposed to have access to, especially when you’re already paying for them. I appreciate your patience, and I’ll do what I can to help get things working again.
